Talked my friend into keeping a rainbow darter from his minnow trap earlier this year. I have kept natives but it has been many years ago. A black bullhead that was dime sized when I found it collecting crawfish. I enjoyed collecting food for it because it gave me more interaction with nature. The other time were some northern redbelly dace, a very beautiful fish.
I can't tell if it's my connection or not but I'm going with ig I just can't watch the other 50% of this video rn since yeah… Very sad. As to why I'm not keeping many native fish rn is specifically because idk the local regulations here in Texas and I also don't know what I'd do with them long term since I want to captive breed them, but especially a larger species, I'd need to already have a plan in place for where the kids end up going since I couldn't keep them all if I succeeded ^^'

Loving the native content! I've got a 55 behind my sofa with rainbow shiners, redbelly daces, and rainbow darters. I'm obsessed with the darters. I sit backwards and stare quite often 🤣 I've kept tropicals for a long time, this is my first all native tank. Now I want another. Room temp tanks ftw! 😁
I would like to keep a native tank, but in NH it is illegal to keep native species of any sort, including fish. You're allowed to keep a frog or two, that's about it.

If you ever make it to North Texas please get with me. I would love to take you out to some really cool places that I found. Things like orangethroat darters are plentiful. The red-eared sunfish are absolutely incredible in this area. In my opinion they're prettier than discus. The male red shiners are amazing during the summer here.
I recently collected 5 blackstripe topminnows from my local stream in MO. They're doing well in my cory tank so far. They hang out at the surface or in the current looking for food, I got them to eat some crushed up freeze dried bloodworms and I've seen them eat the repashy and sinking wafers I put in for the corys as well. I also observed some greenside and rainbow darters as well as a banded sculpin that looked like the one collected in the video but a with a little green patchiness on the head, like he's algae covered. I want to do a small outdoor pond for all the cool natives eventually.
Who said I'm not keeping native fish in my aquariums? 😆 sculpin are savages compared to darters, love all the native fish talk your starting.
Alex, I want to keep a native fish in my tank but I don't my wife would appreciate an alligator gar staring her down in the living room lol. Another great video btw 🙂
