An emperor angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) – with its stunning dark blue body, electric blue curved stripes, white snout band, and brilliant golden-yellow tail – was gliding over the reef when it spotted something: a tiny white cleaner shrimp with bold red spots and bands.
The shrimp vanished inside a sand hole. The angelfish followed.
When it emerged moments later, the angelfish’s mouth was held wide open – revealing food inside. Then, it ate.
What happened to the shrimp? Did the angelfish find a meal in the hole? Or was the shrimp the meal?
