Want to use smoke in your shots? See how I used some unconventional items to make a DIY smoke machine for videos and photos!
You will need these items for the smoke machine:
BATTERY
I would suggest a 15w battery or higher. That will give you plenty of smoke. The one I used in the video was an Eleaf iStick 50W which a friend gave to me. Turned out to be way overkill so 15+ watts would be fine. The battery I used charges via USB but some units will need one or two 18650 batteries.
TANK
There are tons of tanks out there but I used an Nautilus Atlantis tank.
LIQUID
Again, many different kinds/brands. I went with a no nicotine version.
NOSE SUCKER
I grabbed a pack of 3 here on Amazon (PAID LINK):
Microphone seen in video on Amazon (PAID LINK):
Disclaimer:
I’m not advising you to smoke or vape. I’m only using these parts to create a smoke effect in videos. You must be 18 or older to purchase these items.
There is plenty of information online regarding the different parts and how to use them.

Great tip, thanks
What a FABULOUS idea!!! 🤯 I'll be using this technique for the "smoked jalapeno" cider we are bringing back at Tumbling Creek Cidery in SWVA.
Can you use "fog juice"?
Cool. Thanks dude.
Hey DSLR video Shooter! would the smaller vapes shaped like a stick also work for this?
What lens are you using?
That's great I'm trying to figure out how to film a scene of a burnt smoking body any suggestions or know of where i can look to learn a technique to achieve this in camera effect?
good one
where to buy these products in india
Thanks, i am not a smoker neither use vapor but i’dlike to add good smoke effect for my toysphotowork, and my friend gimme this link, thanks for this
clever. thank you.
I do have a baby nose sucker but not a vape😔
Thanks yeah
Did you put a layer of static noise on the footage? It looks very strange, especially on shadows and when the camera does pan/tilt.
That's amazing… waiting for a chance to use this.
Would a lens blower work instead of this sucker thing?
I honestly love how creative you are, inspired me to actually try and make me videos seriously for ones
Cool tips that can be usefull in videos. Or photos, like the thumbnail for videos 😀
Now get the hell outta here, I gotta vape!
very nice.
So damn awesome!
you know u can do tornado trick with that upward hand motion right… 😛
@***** So finally ordered all the stuff needed for this video. And got the Vegetable Glycerin. So for us non vaping – vaping newbs. So how do you use the vaporizer lol! I got the eleaf qc200 for this. I.E what wattage should we use, do I load the liquid into the tank before turning it on? How do we use this thingy? lol
How you freeze the noise in shadows ?
The frozen look
Well done!
Such a great idea! Thanks for sharing, Caleb.
It was really cool.
Thank you for the tips.
Waiting for more videos.
Love This!!
Really nice effect
fantastic. thanks, Caleb. I had an idea to use my dicso smoke machine but this solution looks a lot better and less bulky!
Couldn't I use the rocket blaster from when cleaning my camera lens? It's already in my bag.
I wont recommend using haze around your gear. haze is essentially oil vapors, so after a couple of "hazings" you gear will be a little oily and slippery
Now that is a cool tip. Thank you. I can imagine that coming in handy for some sorta of creepy reveal, opening an old box found in the attic or something like that.
Can you make one for kids that can't get ahold of a vape?
cool
Hey Caleb, any chance you got your hands on a GH5 yet? I'm really thinking about pulling the trigger on one when they get here!!
What a cool Idea, thanks for sharing 🙂
Great tutorial, as usual. But I have to point something out. What you used to achieve the effect is vapor, not smoke. Smoke is the product of combustion. Vapor is liquid vaporized. Why I care about this distinction? Simply because vaping has a direct opposite mission to smoking – getting people off the stinkies (that have hundreds of harmful elements). I am not going to go into pros and cons of nicotine here. At this point I just want to convey that I hate for people to think that vaping is equal to smoking. Thanks for reading.
This is pretty damn nifty! I actually just finished a product shoot for a vape pen a few weeks ago and wish I had known about the baby sucker trick. We had to fudge the shot numerous times with the model taking hits of the pen.
Man! Thanks for sharing this with us! Gotta get same kinda setup! Cheers!
Will you make a review of GH5?
Very clever! Thanks for the tutorial 🙂
Love this trick!!
You ingenious bastard.
Hi from Dubai. What's your lighting and camera settings when using 120fps on A6500. Thanks! 😀
