NOTE: to cat owners – peace lily and all lilys are poisonous to cats. It will put them into renal failure if they eat it. They will die if left untreated. Always get them to a vet ASAP if you know they have eaten a lily plant, leaves or flower. Vets can treat them if caught early enough, by providing supportive care like intravenous fluids etc. Indoor cats in particular, will eat house plants without naturally knowing they are poisonous. Fish tanks obviously attract a cats attention, so ensure you do not choose lilys as your out of tank growing plant.
Cat and dog owners need to be aware that lilies are toxic!
I recommend lettuce, cilantro, bok Choy, dill, spearmint and basil. All of these are heavy nitrogen feeders and "cut and come again" plants. For instance, you can harvest the outside leaves of lettuce and leave the middle and it will continue to grow back several times without planting. If you have lights on a 16-8 timer you will get the most growth and thus most nitrogen utilization.

I have houseplants in my 10 gallon tank. How many is to many? Additionally, Should clay pebbles be added to the basket of plants.

Before I begin using house plants in my little aquarium, will it cause an algae problem for me? I've tried underwater plants and it helped the clarity and quality of my tank but it produced ALOT of algae quickly so I stopped. I am also a 1st time aqua mom to a an african dearg frog and 6 tetras as of April 2023. I love plants and this sounds like a perfect idea for me but I'm afraid to cause a huge maintenance problem.

I know this video is a bit old but maybe you'll see this, I was wondering (nobody mentions these questions that I can find) I had to remove my HOB lid for noise and would like to try this but A) I don't understand where the roots would go as they can't really expand into the water and isn't that going to clog the heck out of the filter? Trim the roots often maybe? B) How can you clean and service everything with an overgrown plant on the filter, just remove the plant? Is that okay or will it upset the plant? C) Do you still need filter media? I guess I am having a hard time imagining the maintenance aspect of putting the plants in the filter instead of the tank itself but I would like to hide the filter cause it's ugly now! LOL.

Sir when ever I grow house plants in aquarium the plants root little brown type in after 5,6 months but plants health is good but same when ever I grow same plants in normal tap water there roots never brown always white can you tell me why?
I do this also but I cut about a 1.5”-2” slice of grey pool noodles and then just stick the trimmed end of your cutting through it and place it at an open edge of your aquarium. It stabilizes it nicely. And like you said I have roots start in a little over a week. I’m gonna try floating an avocado seed next.
One of the most hardy plants I've had growing in my aquarium water, is Bhut Jalokia/ Chocolate Bhutla/ purple ghost pepper. it will take a range of parameters, refuse to die, and will supply you with enough heat to nuke all your family. I've had these plants growing in a plastic shoe-box, full of clay pellets, watered with cheap supermarket plant nutrients. at first they didnt do well, but as soon as algae started, they made oxygen for the roots, and plants took off. I am growing insane amounts of scovile, in my bathroom window, in a country 4000miles from the plants origin, on the cheapest supermarket liquid fertilizer.
I have tried growing so many kinds of plants in the clay pellets above my big aquarium. Stuff like salads, onions, paracress, kale, carrots, broccoli, fancy cucumber, fancy tomatoes, but the thing that just refuses to give up, give great results, even under shitty lights from aliababa… Ghost pepper.
I got a seed packet from my uncle one Christmas, 3 out of 4 seeds were smashed in transit. from that one seed, I now have hundreds of seed, ifn't thousands, and more dried capsaicin than i think i will ever need in my life, from just a year or two growing in room temperature, under cheapest leds..

My wife almost killed a potted Monstera, but was able to bring it back and now it’s booming! I’m trying to steal a cutting for it, but I value my life. 😂

About a year ago I took some marbled queen pothos cuttings and put them in fish tank to root…they helped filter water so I left them there…and now are growing up wall and across window top..the original cutting leaves were 3" now growing out of aquariums, they have 8" leaves now. I do thin the roots in the tank but it's not hard to do. Creating a jungle.
I'm gonna have to try out that philodendron, I love how it's splitting off everywhere, makes it easy to keep them small for aesthetics. I'm looking to move my tank under a big window so non-aquatic plants are gonna love it <3
