German Blue Ram being called "peaceful" is a bit of an exaggeration! Sure they aren't as aggressive as Flower Horns or some Cichlids, but they're not usually very good for community tanks with more timid species. Rams can be mean as hell!

I've always loved the look of the Blue Butterfly Moon Platy. Colorful, with beautiful but not overwhelming fins. I've always found the fins of a Betta to be too "busy".
Best part is, they thrive in a pair of females in smaller(10 gallon) tanks and you can still add a small school of White Cloud Mountain Minnow. The best small tank schooling fish, IMO. Could probably add a few bottom feeders that have a small bioload, like Shrimp as well, though it might be pushing it.
Edit: The only Betta I love is the Mustard Betta, cause the fins aren't that "busy" looking.
