I love that you do these special streams! This makes my heart so happy. Thank you! My partner introduced your videos to me when I started playing Skyrim for the first time this past summer. We have watched almost everything on YouTube (more please!). But the first Rosa video was the crown jewel. All the Rosa videos are. Thank you for doing this!
The protruding part of the goblin shark is the rostrum. On the underside of the rostrum of all elasmobranchs–sharks, rays, skates, and chimeras–are high concentrations of specialized organs called the ampullae of lorenzini. These are the organs that elasmobranchs use to pick up the electrical impulses put out by heartbeats of their prey. The goblin shark's protruding rostrum allows for more of the ampullae to exist and allow it to find prey in the darkness of the deep ocean. Thus, the shark's rostrum becomes something akin to the wands TSA uses to check people at security. Rather, TSA agents copy the Goblin shark's hunting strategy.
Elasmobranch Biology was one of the specializations I selected for my Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from one of the top three programs in the country. I also took Marine Mammology, Tropical Ecology, Fisheries Biology, Estuarine Ecology, Marine Ecophysiology, Comparative Animal Physiology, and Marine Invertebrate Zoology for my undergrad cores and specializations.
After hearing your answer: elasmobranch skeletons are cartilaginous (cart-ih-laa-jih-nuhs) except for the teeth and the vertebrae (which we can use to age a shark by counting the rings like a tree).
After hearing his explanation: the jaws do protrude. However, the way he asked the question was misleading. The jaws are not constantly protruding and have to be activated.
